Whyville and the Scion

Scion reaching a young audience

Scion reaching a young audience

Toyota’s always been known for innovative marketing, but their new Scion kiddie marketing has got to be their boldest advertising move yet:

It may appear counterintuitive, but Toyota says the promotion is working. Ten days into the campaign, visitors to the site had used the word “Scion” in online chats more than 78,000 times; hundreds of virtual Scions were purchased, using “clams,” the currency of Whyville; and the community meeting place “Club Scion” was visited 33,741 times. These online Scion owners customized their cars, drove around the virtual Whyville and picked up their Scion-less friends for a ride.

Waiting for youngsters to buy cars will be difficult, but they’ll certainly remember saving their ‘clams’ in Whyville and will appreciate Toyota’s sponsorship from a young age.  I’m not sure they’ll influence much buying at this point, but the long term branding is priceless.

Vehicle Safety

Side Impact Airbags

The all new Chevrolet Impala and Toyota Avalon haveauto news received some of the highest side impact crash ratings. The secret to their success is the new side impact airbags that were installed.  The Impala and the Avalon both endured side impacts from an SUV size car.

With these new tests coming out positive, it looks as though side impact air bags may become standardized in more vehicles.

Impala and Avalon are star performers: The side structures of these two cars performed reasonably well in resisting intrusion from the striking barrier during the crash test. Both cars are equipped with standard curtain-style side airbags designed to protect the heads of people in both front and rear seats.

The Impala and Avalon designs were also tested without the air bags and scored very poor in the tests. When an SUV hits a small to mid-sized car in the side, sometimes the SUV actually breaks the barrier and the drivers head hit by the oncoming car, thus causing extensive head injuries.

Hopefully we’ll see these side airbags being put in more and more cars.

Auto Industry Minority Report

Toyota Is Minority Conscious

The auto industry is one of the biggest industries in the world, and it makes sense that they would strive to be culturally diverse. It seems today that Toyota has snatched the top spot for being minority conscious. Black Enterprise, an ethnic magazine, announced Toyota as being one of the top 40 minority conscious companies.

Toyota was also recognized for making an effort to become culturally diverse. Toyota offers advertising promotions, community outreach, and scholarships for minorities.

"Toyota has always considered diversity and inclusion to be a top priority across the company," said Pat Pineda, group vice president of Toyota Motor North America Inc.,

I really like Toyota’s attitude about this award. Even though they have received many awards like this, they still realize there is still much work to do. Toyota seems committed to taking the American auto industry where it needs to go.

Ideal Vehicle Awards

What do you want in a car?

What is an ideal vehicle ?

An “ideal” is defined as an excellent or perfect example. In the first Ideal Vehicle Awards, announced today by automotive research and consulting firm AutoPacific, owners rate their new 2006 model year cars and trucks by how closely they come to their ideal. The cars or trucks that owners would change the least are the most ideal.

Those carmakers that best understand their customers and create the vehicle their core buyer group desires have come closest to the ideal.

And it looks like Ford and Hyundai know their customers best. Hyundai received the top overall spot for most ideal brand, while Ford captured a few high spots themselves. Rating the idealness of a car is somewhat intriguing, but these people apparently know how to do it. I guess a car is the most ideal when the owner  has the least things he or she would change about the vehicle.

But, here’s a look at the rest of the ideal awards for 2006.

Auto Industry Working Together

GM and Suzuki working together for hybrids

hybrid newsOdd news comes out of the auto world all the time, and today is no different. After selling their shares of Suzuki, GM plans to develop hybrid vehicles with Suzuki in North America. Suzuki and GM both are lacking in thy hybrid department.

GM and Suzuki plan to develop a hybrid SUV in order to break into the American hybrid market. These two companies see the American Market heading into this direction. It is reported that their sport utility vehicles will have engine displacements around 3 liters.

Maybe this is a sign that GM is finally catching on, but why did they choose Suzuki? I’m not sure, but I hope that everything goes well and they’re able to break into the American auto market and combat Toyota.

Auto Warranty Information

Why you need an extended warranty

An extended auto warranty is essential for any car owner. Many people don’t think about the benefits of having an extended warranty. With any new or used car you purchase, you may want to consider getting the powertrain extended warranty. Not many used cars come with this, and sometimes new cars come with a very short powertrain warranty.

You also may be interested in a component or bumper to bumper warranty that can save you a lot of time, stress, and money.  In the time of need your warranty will be ready if you get it from autowarranties.com. If you want more information on powertrain, components, and bumper to bumper warranties, check out our new car and used car information pages that will give you all the information you could need.

Alternative Fuels

Honda thinks they have it

auto warranty It looks like hydrogen fuel cell cars could be a little closer than first expected. Until a few weeks ago, most everyone thought that hydrogen fuel cells were 10-15 years off. Now, however, Honda has plans for production on their hydrogen cars in the next three to four years.

If Honda is the first manufacture to release hydrogen fuel cell cars, that will boost them into the new realm of autos. In theory, the hydrogen car would use hydrogen to generate electricity that powers a motor.  In fact, Britain already has a hydrogen filling station because some of their public transportation system has hydrogen engines.

Right now, Honda claims, their in the process of refining and working on more efficient ways for the fuel cells to operate. They’re hoping in three to four years they will have met the desired output and efficiency needed to be worth buying.

The first hydrogen based car will be based on the FCC concept, which was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show last year.  It is interesting that Honda is so positive about the outlook because GM and Toyota, not to long ago, stopped working together because it was too difficult to produce and they (GM and Toyota) were unsure of the hydrogen fuel cell’s future.

Choosing the right car warranty

Choosing the right car warranty

Finding an auto warranty can be difficult, because now there are simply so many to choose from.  However, I’ve come up with two questions I ask when searching through the warranty quotes.

Is the electrical covered?
Often that’s the first parts to go out and a shade-tree mechanic can no longer fix newer cars because of the complicated electrical system.  Be sure your warranty covers electrical systems.

Is the cooling system covered?
What if your air goes out?  What will you and your family do to fix it?  If you can find a warranty that covers cooling, then you might want to give it a closer look.

5 Hybrid Myths

Demystifying the hybrid

With hybrid technology looking as though it will be the “next generation” for cars, there are certain myths that are very prevalent in main stream American thought. There are actually 10 big myths of hybrid cars, but we’ll just look at 5.

You need to plug in the car
Usually, whenever you talk about electricity, almost everyone’s mind jumps to the outlet. In that, you have plug-in a hybrid every night before you go to sleep. However, that could not be more untrue. Hybrids today don’t need to be plugged in; engineers developed regenerative braking.  Whenever you brake, that friction and energy that is produced is harnessed and stored in multiple batteries in the car.  However, there are some hybrids that you do plug in that get better gas mileage because they stay plugged up over night. There are some hybrids that have regenerative braking and plug in technology together.

Hybrid batteries need to be replaced.
With the charge of a hybrid battery staying between 40%- 60%, automakers have greatly extended the hybrid’s battery. There is, however, the standard warranty that comes when you buy a hybrid that includes the batteries, so if something goes wrong you’ll have the warranty.

Hybrids are a new phenomenon
The first gas-electric patent was filed in 1905.  However, when the self starter was introduced in 1913, gasoline engines became more prevalent and easier and cheaper to make.

People buy hybrids only to save money on gas
Saving gas at the pump is probably the foremost outcome of owning a hybrid, but the majority of owners actually have them for environmental reasons. A hybrid car sends a message. It sends a message that “I care about the environment.” That’s what some people want others to know about them. (bumper stickers are cheaper)

Hybrids are expensive.
Beginnings in 2006, hybrids were available in 10 different models. The price varies largely. Some hybrids barely cross the $13,000, while other companies have luxury hybrids that can cost up to $60,000.  Hybrids do add about $3,000 to the price tag of any car, but that figure is dropping rapidly.
