Biodiesel: Green Myth or Hard Facts?

What is biodiesel? Another green crazed theory of how to save the world? How likely is it to be a commonly used fuel? How does the use of biodiesel effect your auto warranty? Does it smell like stale grease?
Here is an author who hopes to educate you on what the truth is about biodiesel by correcting the following “myths”.
- Biodiesel is ethanol (or vice versa).
- Ethanol is better than biodiesel.
- You must convert your vehicle to run biodiesel.
- You have to be a diesel mechanic to use biodiesel.
- Biodiesel will wreck your engine.
- Biodiesel will cause a noticeable power decrease.
- Biodiesel use will void your warranty.
- Biodiesel doesn’t work in cold weather.
- Biodiesel is hard to find.
- Biodiesel is too expensive.
- Biodiesel requires more energy to produce than is provided by the fuel.
- Biodiesel’s increases net emissions when the entire production process is taken into account (farming, distribution, etc).
- Biodiesel causes deforestation of the rain forest.
- Biodiesel exhaust smells bad.
- Biodiesel exhaust produces more harmful emissions than diesel.
- Diesel engines are more polluting than gasoline engines, so selling my car and buying a diesel is a bad idea.
- Biodiesel is only used by crazy hippies and Willie Nelson.
