A new law that took place last week in Minnesota requires a higher standard to dealerships selling vehicles advertised as “certified” used cars.

In the past, a dealer might be able to explain certified many different ways, possibly withholding history or damage towards the vehicle. Under the new used car warranty law that is part of a “car owners’ bill of rights” passed last spring, state law requires, among other things, all certified used cars must go through a thorough inspection. Besides defining “certified,” dealers now must make over 40-disclosure statements including whether a credit report was done in determining their ability to pay off their loan. These new requirements help restore a new car buyer’s faith in making their purchase.

Regardless of whether the vehicle is certified or not, used car warranties should be an essential part of any purchase.

There is no doubt about it, vehicles are lasting longer these days. For instance industry representatives point out that in 2000 just over 28 percent of 15 year old vehicles are still on the road. In 2007, that number jumped to about 45 percent. This means there is a very good chance that most vehicles will be on the road far past their new car warranty.

The need for a good used car warranty is now far more likely. There are numerous aftermarket auto warranty companies offering solid auto warranty options.

Perhaps at some point in the future auto manufacturers will catch up with the trend.

Sometimes I think there is no such thing as a good new car warranty. 

 I had a new Ford Thunderbird and just prior to the manufacturer’s warranty expiration it was missing on one cylinder, apparently because the ignition coils failed. After some arguing, Ford issued a warranty extension for just this issue.  Shortly thereafter, while on a trip I had to take the car to Ford dealership in Miami, they told me they were going to have to replace the throttle body, flush the injectors, and reprogram the computer (which had already been done). It was then that I was told the bill would be $1098.00 because this was not covered. 

It was then that I decided to look into an extended auto warranty. I looked at some extended auto warranty plans and decided to contact Auto Advantage.  I was able to purchase a used car warranty at a rate far less that the dealership was able to offer.

The manufacturers warranty will still be in effect in some cases and there in a coverage fee might have to be paid by the buyer. At times the seller or agent might be willing to take on that charge, which makes it easy for the buyer.

Having a used car warranty has a lot of advantages for vehicle owners. Cars do require more repairs and replacements with increased usage and while a used car warranty will not cover all the costs that you might incur, it will still save you from shelling out as much money as you would end up paying if you do not have a warranty of any sort.

However, as far as used car warranties are concerned, it is not a one size fits all scene, and it is important that you keep the following points in mind in order to get the best warranty for your car:

• What is covered by the warranty? Is it a bumper to bumper warranty, powertrain, component or other kind of warranty? Is it enough for your needs or do you need a more comprehensive coverage?
• The reputation of the company and how it works. There are a number of companies which are in the market solely for making money. Make sure that you do not get caught in their trap.
• Do not take the first deal that you get. It is advised that you get as many quotes as possible and do some comparison shopping before buying a used car warranty.

Having a used car warranty is more important than having any kind of warranty on a new car because like all machines, your car will also start developing problems with increase in age and usage. While a new car would hardly ask for repairs or replacements, they would become a regular feature of car care as your car crosses the age of three. Therefore, it is not only important that you buy a warranty for your used car, but that you get one after careful consideration.
One of the most important things to consider before buying a used car warranty is the coverage that the warranty provides. Check out what is covered and what is not covered in your warranty. Buying a cheap warranty and then paying for everything out of your pocket hardly makes sense, does it? Buy a costlier warranty but one that covers all the components that might require repair or replacement. While warranties that cover wear and tear related repairs are very costly, you should at least buy a warranty that covers the power train and components. Getting a bumper to bumper warranty for you used car is a good idea, since you might be required to replace or repair a number of components in an old car.
